Case Study: 5 Lift Complex public Scaffolding Project in Southend, Essex

Client: Confidential
Location: Hamlet Court Road, Southend, Essex
Project Duration: 6 Weeks
Requirement: 5 lifts, 35 feet long scaffolding

Overview

Fairfax Scaffolding was approached to undertake a complex scaffolding project in a bustling junction of Southend, Essex. The project entailed the construction of a 35-feet long scaffold with 5 lifts, situated directly on the city's pavement. Given the location's high foot traffic and the necessity to ensure public safety, meticulous planning and coordination were paramount.

Challenge

The primary challenge stemmed from the project's location. Being situated in a busy junction in Southend and on the city's pavement necessitated obtaining a license from the local council. This process involved the submission of comprehensive plans, method statements, and risk assessments to demonstrate the project's adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

Moreover, due to the scaffold's positioning, unloading materials presented significant logistical challenges. The busy nature of the area meant that conventional unloading methods were unfeasible without causing substantial disruption.

Solution

To address these challenges, Fairfax Scaffolding engaged in extensive discussions with Southend City Council and other stakeholders. Recognising the potential for significant disruption, a collaborative decision was made to apply for a suspension of parking bays in the vicinity. This strategic move facilitated a more efficient unloading process and minimized obstruction to local traffic and pedestrians.

Understanding the importance of reducing the impact on the public and local businesses, Fairfax Scaffolding and Southend City Council agreed that the scaffolding erection would commence early on a Sunday morning. The council granted special dispensation for work to begin at 7 am, significantly earlier than usual, to take advantage of the quieter streets.
